If you're buying Clairefontaine A5 notebooks for a design studio, a corporate stationery program, or a retail shelf, you don't need me to tell you the paper is good. You need to know whether this batch is good. Those are two different questions.
I'm a quality and brand compliance manager at a stationery company. I review roughly 200 unique stationery items a year—maybe 180, I'd have to check—and I've rejected 12% of first deliveries in 2024. Step 3: Do the fountain pen test
A lot of people think high gsm means fountain-pen friendly. That's a misconception. Ink behavior is controlled by surface sizing and internal additives, not just paper weight. A 120 gsm sheet can feather badly; a 90 gsm sheet with the right sizing can handle a wet nib beautifully.

Open the notebook to three random pages and lay a ruler across the ruling lines. On a lined page, the vertical distance between lines should stay consistent from the top to the bottom. In 2022, I found a batch where the line spacing drifted by 0.8 mm from the first line to the last. Nobody sees it at first, but it becomes obvious when someone tries to line up a page under another page.
For French ruled (Seyes) or grid layouts, check the margins and the horizontal spacing too. If it's a dot grid, verify that the dots create straight vertical and horizontal columns. A 0.5 mm shift across a page is tolerable; a pattern that drifts is not.
Step 5: Count pages and check the binding
"Pages vs sheets" is one of the oldest miscommunications in stationery. I once said "200 pages" and the supplier heard "200 sheets." For brand-critical color work, the industry uses Delta E as a measurement. You won't always need that level of accuracy on a notebook cover, but you should know what you're comparing it to.
